When you inherit a house, you inherit all the things in it... including any spirits that dwell within.

When I was growing up, we had one of the best neighbors ever. She was an older lady that I will refer to as Miss Annie. She was one of those grandmotherly types that wore a big hat to church every Sunday and always had something good cooking on the stove. She looked out for our family and we looked out for hers. As her house was only a block over from ours, we were able to look in on one another often. I mowed her yard every Saturday morning and she was always ready for me with cold grape soda.
Miss Annie was a widower, having lost her husband back in 1959 due to complications with pneumonia. Apparently it was a terrible misfortune that befell him. He was bed ridden in the house and was under the care of a hospice nurse. Miss Annie had went to a church service while the nurse was watching her husband. The nurse fell asleep and Miss Annie's husband asphyxiated in his own fluid, unable to call for help.
Miss Annie would often tell us how she still could hear her husband at night. Clearing his throat, opening closet doors and making noises in the bedroom in which he had died. She would say that he was very active whenever a woman with long dark hair would enter the house. She felt that his spirit was still angry at the nurse (who had long dark hair) and was trying to chase them from his home. My mother would joke back that she was glad she had short blonde hair. I can even recall times that I would see things fall off shelves, or hear banging noises in the back of the house, to which Miss Annie would blame her late husband.
Dear Miss Annie passed peacefully in her sleep in the fall of 84. My mother was very surprised to learn she had been named sole heir to her home due to our late neighbor having no close family or children of her own. My mother was in the rental business and after a years worth of renovations, she put the house on the market.
Mother could not keep a renter in that house. People would complain of slamming noises, doors opening at night, and footsteps. It seemed that if we had female renters, the strange happening were even worse. We often had renters get up and move out in the middle of the night, only to contact us days later with tales of being scratched in their sleep and seeing shadowy forms in the back bedroom.
At one point, my mother rented the house to the parents of Thomas and Julius Jones of football fame. Unfortunately their parents were less than responsible and left the house in the middle of the night owing months and months of rent. On top of that, they also wrecked the place. We had a long renovation in store for us. The house sat empty for almost two years as we made repairs, when time and money would allow. It was during the end of this renovation that my encounters with this angry spirit came to be.
Back in the day, we had 12 channels to watch on TV, no internet, and if you were super lucky, you had a game system that would let you play a mind numbing 8 bit game. Being bored was an easy thing to come by so we had to come up with our own entertainment. During one of these bouts of boredom my friends and I decided to spend the night in the vacant house. My mother allowed me and three of my best friends to camp out in the old house. We quickly made our way, sleeping bags in hand, to the old house.
The house was completely empty of furniture except for an old potbellied stove in the living room. There was no electricity or water so we had made preparations to bring snacks, candles, cord wood, and board games to entertain us. After we had set up a suitable "camp' in the living room, we placed candles all around the room to ensure even lighting and settled in for the night.
I think the first strange thing we noticed was how unusually cold it was inside the house. It was late August, but we all felt chilled. I went out to get some of the wood we had brought to start a fire. I even remarked to my friends, when I returned, how much warmer it was outside. Soon we had a cheery little fire in the stove and we all felt better huddling near the warmth.
We noticed shortly after lighting the fire, that the house seemed to get noisy. By noisy I mean popping, cracking, creaking, bumping noises coming from the back three bedrooms. Being a logical bunch, we attributed this to the heat of the fire, causing the cold wooden boards to contract and expand. Although the sounds continued, and even grew in volume and regularity, we paid them no
heed.
As the night wore on, we played many games, ate much junk food, and imbibed many pops. Since there was no running water, your only choice for bladder relief was to head for the back porch and go "redneck style" outside. To get to the back porch, you had to navigate through the adjoining kitchen. In the center of the  kitchen wall, and in full view of the living room, was a large picture window. The street light from a block down glowed slightly through this window and gave us our only other source of light in the house. One of my good friends, whom I will refer to as "Cobb", felt the pressure of too many pops. He was forced to head through the dark kitchen to find the backdoor on his own. As he did I took notice of that dim street light shining through the window as passed . For a brief moment his form blocked the light as he continued on to the back porch.
Many minutes passed and he had still not returned. I was laying prone in the floor on my sleeping bag and had a straight shot view into the kitchen and of the window. I occasionally glanced up to check for his return and pondered out loud as to why it was taking him so long.
The creaking of a board drew my attention back to the window, and there in the dim light I could see a silhouette. I thought, of course, that it was our friend Cobb, returning from the back porch, but the figure just stood there. The body slowly shifting back and forth, the head craning at an angle, as if to get a better look into the living room. Cobb was a notorious trixter, and at this point, I could only imagine he was seeking to play a prank on us by sneaking back in. Without drawing attention, I whispered a warning to the other two friends in the living room with me. They cast sideways glances into the kitchen and smiled knowingly that we had foiled the would be prankster.

After several minutes of this, our mood grew impatient. If Cobb was truly trying to scare us, he needed to hurry. The figure had made no movements to come into the living room just continued to crane and stare. I was about to call out to to figure when the front door opened. We all jumped in surprise as Cobb walked in.
He had walked around to the front of the house to bring in more firewood. I spun around in horror. If Cobb was behind us, gathering wood, then who was in the kitchen! The figure was still standing there is the weak light of the street lamp. Slowly it turned and walked away, as if heading not to the back porch, but deeper into the house where the bedrooms were!
To say we were rattled would be an understatement. We quickly packed up our gear, doused the fire, and headed back down the road to the safety of my house. When we told my mother of the encounter, she scolded us for being silly. We ended up staying in my room the rest of the night, not daring to sleep for fear that the shadowy figure had followed us.
Of course, it didn't. It did not visit me and I, in return, did not visit it... that is until almost 9 months later.  It is then I had my second and last encounter with this spirit.
I had a cousin from Ohio visiting that summer. She was around the same age as me and my friends, so she fit in well. Late one night, while she and I were talking on the front porch, I got around to telling her the story of the haunted house. She was instantly intrigued and begged to go see the house for herself. I firmly told her there was no way I was going to go to that house in the middle of the night. She continued to plead and whine till I finally gave in. Grabbing a flash light, we headed over.
I had no intention of going inside. I was just going to take her to the door and let her look in and come right back. As we approached the house, she grew more and more excited about the prospect of seeing a ghost. By the time we were at the gate of the yard, she was practically bouncing. We made our way to the front porch. She impatiently grabbed for the handle of the glass storm door and opened it. Cupping her hands over her eyes she peered into the single window of the old wooden door. She complained about not being able to see inside and not even the flashlight would satisfy her curiosity. She wanted to go in.
I told her I would not go in, and further more I did not have the key. On impulse she grabbed the doorknob and with no effort at all, swung it inward. My mother must have left it unlocked, but this was highly unusual of her. Before I could comment, she was bounding inside with the only flashlight. I stood there watching the storm door shut slowly behind her. I called to her from the porch. When she did not answer I retreated to the gate, as the fear of my previous encounter in the house took hold of me. I called out again and again. She promptly ignored me.
Through the shut storm door, I could make out the ray of the flashlight whipping around in the darkness as she scanned the house over. I watched as that light receded into the back rooms of the house. I shouted at her again, panic over taking me, as I watched her venture deeper into the house.
I then recalled the words of Miss Annie. About how her late husband did not like women in the house, especially those with long brown hair. My cousin had long, dark brown curls to her shoulders! I desperately pleaded with her to come out. Several minutes passed before I could see the beam of the flashlight returning to the front door. Relief washed over me as I saw her standing behind the glass door, the warm glow of the light in her hand illuminating the doorway. She reached for the handle of the outter door when suddenly she stopped and swung the light around. In the blink of an eye, she came crashing through the glass of the storm door! Lights danced in the living room as the flashlight spun wildly.

   I rushed to help her.
"I was pushed!" was all she could say. I tried to examine her in the darkness of the porch, but could make nothing out in the gloom. I felt blood on my hands. I started to get up and retrieve the flashlight, when I saw it!
As the flashlight lay in the center of the room, it cast it's beam on the far wall. There against the wall was a shadowy figure just visible in the glow of the light. A shadow of a man, but there was no man standing in the light to cause it! Gathering her up and out of the broken glass, we flew back home. Leaving the front door open, and the flashlight laying in the house.
When we were safely back to my room, I gathered band aids and peroxide for her cuts. Luckily, her injuries were superficial. Nothing more than a small cut on her knee and elbow. As I worked on her injuries, I asked her what happened?
She told me that she had went into each room in the house and found nothing. As she went to the last of the three bedrooms, she had a very uneasy feeling come over her. She quickly made her way back to the front door. When she went to exit, she could have sworn she heard a congested, wheezing cough come from behind her. As she turned to see what it was, she flew through the glass door as if  pushed!
Nobody believed her story. My uncle (her father) was furious, my mother even more so. I was grounded for a month despite my cousin swearing over and over I had nothing to do with her accident. That marked that last time I was to go near that house.
After that, renters came and went. Some would tell us stories of hearing noises in the night, some would not. It was apparent that the activity had died down, somewhat, after my last encounter.
It is currently occupied by a local man and his two young sons. They have been there for many years now. They have never reported anything out of the ordinary with the house. Could they just be ignoring the ghost? Could it be that the ghost finds them acceptable and chooses not to reveal itself? Perhaps that angry spirit felt vindicated by forcing my cousin out of it's home that fateful night? Does the spirit still haunt the house at all?Only time will tell.

For the record, I'm not going to be the one to find out.......

Where there's smoke, there's fire.....and where there is fog, there is something creepy going on!

Finally got this monster in. 1000 watts of pure fog power (the average fog machine is 400watts). I already have the fog chiller drilled, built, sealed, and ready for testing. Going to do a day and a night test. I will post videos as well as some of the steps and modifications I made to the original plans.
Can't wait to turn this bad boy on and see what it can do. Now I know how all those mad scientist feel right before the lighting storm that will bring their creation to life!

 MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

One would ponder, if a cat has nine lives.... do they come back as nine ghosts?

I want to buy a cat like that. Archie just screams and looks at me mean when I try to spray paint him.

He knew he was doomed to search this earth forever for his heart's desire.... his flesh and bones will have long turned to dust, but still his spirit will mourn on.

I know this is lame but I was in a hurry.
The economy is to blame for retail stores not putting out their Halloween merchandise early. Think about it. There are still boat loads of back to school items everywhere you look. Apparently dismal sales of these items are bottle-necking the flow of seasonal merchandise.  The good news is, most of it is on clearance and hopefully they will sell it down fast, making way for Halloween goodness!

I do have a few updates for all you eager Halloween enthusiast.

Michaels has their full Halloween stock out in stores. You can also go to the website here (Michaels), but be warned that it has very little online as far as the good Halloween stock. In stores (at least the one in Kingsport and JC) has a pretty darn great selection. We went there last week and found items such as :

Set of two cemetery columns with skulls on top of each and rusty chain hanging in the middle (foam prop) $19.99
Groundbreaking Skeleton pieces $24.99 (but I think CVS and Wallgreens will have it cheaper)
Set of three tombstones, (some looked pretty real but the poly stone are better) $16.99
Pollystone tombstones small, medium and large at all range of prices from $7.99 to $49.99
Lenticular  portraits in poly stone frames $9.99
Lenticular portraits with sound/light up eyes on motion/sound detectors $19.99
Smaller tabletop lenticular portraits (plastic) $6.99-$9.99
Large Spider Larva Balls!
Several large animated creatures.
They also had the usual selection of great mood setting brick-a-brack, what-nots, and, unfortunately,  glitter, glitter, and more glitter (when did glitter become a Halloween item?)
I also overheard one of the workers there saying they had more stuff in the back they were putting out soon!
We picked up one note worthy item for 10 bucks... but there is now a 40% off coupon floating about, so I kick myself (just a little)

If you really want some cheap lenticular pictures. Save yourself some cash and go to a yard sale, buy some old frames, and head to Dollar Tree for the pictures (or buy the frames at Dollar Tree and antique them yourself).
Michaels always has several great children projects and other party/fun Halloween stuff so it is definitely worth your time for a visit. At least they have better stuff than Hobby Lobby(with whom I am sadly disappointed this year)
This year, Michaels is wicKEDly ranKED at 3.5 grimaces.

A fellow blogger has some great pictures from his local Michaels if you are curious. Head over to PUMPKINROT.COM and have look! Check out his blog while you are there, it's one of the best Halloween blogs out there!

Pier 1 (Kingsport TN) also has their over priced Halloween merchandise out. It's mostly ornaments, glitter, table scapes, glitter, plates and bowls, and glitter. Did I mention they have glitter crap? Until Pier 1 gets better Halloween items and better prices, I will not even bother to rank them.

Burke's (Wise VA) had one shelf of Halloween signs. Some were pretty cool. They had very large ones as well as some retro. Still nothing to brag about.

Dollar Wise (Wise VA) Had a good deal of items. Lots of costumes. Lot's of party items. Tons of kiddie stuff. I hope they get more stuff in. They usually have some pretty great items, but so far it is not looking good. Still, I really like Dollar Wise for any holiday or occasion so it is worth your time for a visit.

Lowe's (Wise VA) had mostly HUGE inflatable yard items. They had a few decoration that were cool including the usual selection of life size animatronic door greeters, candy bowls, and yard decor. They did have a selection of cheap ($9.99) monster heads that would thrash around and moan and groan when activated by sound. This would be perfect to attach to the inside of a coffin, hang in a spider web, or place in another hidden/closed off object to give it the appearance of something trying to get out. I plan on building a new coffin this year and I am going to re-purpose one of them to give the coffin the life!(or death? details coming soon). The one thing Lowe's did have were these great clay jack-o-lanterns($19.99). They were round, orange, clay pots, carved like a pumpkin, complete with a place for a candle or light. They had an almost retro look to them and I am beating myself up for not taking a picture or buying one.

I have heard rumblings that stores in Johnson City such as Walgreen's,CVS, and Target have items on the shelves. If the wicKED woman and I get the time this weeKEnD, we may head over that way and search it out. I will try to take some pictures while we are at it.

Get your credit cards warmed up, your debit cards primed, and keep on searching for Halloween! Good hunting!

A rational mind can explain away most supernatural things....at least until it is too late

The couple enjoyed taking vacation in the fall. The weather was better, the crowds thinner, and the rates cheaper. This year they had decided to have a new adventure. They were going to "rough it" in the wilderness. Of course they were a modern day couple, and the idea of "roughing it" was to rent a cabin in the woods of the Great Smoky Mountains. This cabin had all modern conveniences such as running water, electricity, and even  a flat screen satellite TV in the living room. The only real rough part to this vacation would be the unusually long drive, on a road devoid of streetlights, to reach the cabin. The woman at at the rental headquarters had warned them that it was a good drive and there were no neighbors for miles, but it was very inexpensive. With the economy as it was, cheap was the feature they were looking for. They quickly signed the agreement for two nights, grabbed the keys, and were off to the great outdoors.
The long, curvy drive was not as bad as they had anticipated. The fall foliage was a welcome distraction and soon they arrived at a quaint little cabin. It was truly secluded, as they had been told, but it was clean and very nice. Moving quickly, they had their bags unpacked and were resting comfortably in the upstairs bedroom.
The upstairs of the cabin was just a single loft room with a large window in the center. There was not much in the way of furniture. Just a small desk and chair under the window and a bed at the far end of the room. The only light in the room was at the desk. This was due to there being only one outlet for the entire room and it was situated just under the window. There was no TV in the room but they were glad to have come by such a deal. The day wore on and they left the comfort of their home away from home to go into the nearby city for dinner.
Dinner was excellent and they even stopped by several area attractions before the weight of the day was on them. Navigating the curving road back to the cabin seemed to take forever as weariness seeped into them. They finally arrived, where they quickly changed and were ready for bed.
There was a brief argument over the electrical outlet as they both needed to charge their seemingly always drained cell phones. They had to unplug the lamp, the rooms only source of light, to plug them both up. The woman jumped into bed as the gentleman showed his full chivalrousness by unplugged the lamp. The room was plunged into darkness. He then fumbled about with the second phone charger till he finally snapped it into the socket and set both phones to charge.
Sometime in the night, the woman was awakened by a strange creaking sound. The only light in the room was now coming from the window. Muffled moonlight streamed through onto the desk and the chair. She could not see further into the loft...where the noise had come from. She then noticed two red dots in the black soup of the room. They were mere pin points of light but they seemed to stare at her in a angry manner. She heard the creaking sound again, followed by what she could only imagine were clawed feet on the wooden floor.
   She screamed!
Her husband awoke with a flourish and shouted out to her. "What! What!"
She pointed into the darkness at the red dots. "There! Over there! There is something staring at me and it's walking this way!".
The man squinted into the night and slowly made his way to the desk. Again he struggled to pierce the darkness but to no avail. Fumbling again in the dim moonlight he was able to unplug one of the chargers and swap it out with the lamp. The welcome light revealed...... nothing. After a lengthy investigation into the room and the downstairs, they found the doors locked, the windows intact, and no sign of anyone or anything.
The husband surmised that the "eyes" that had been staring at her were nothing more than the battery lights on the charging cell phones.
The woman felt foolish but still the bitter taste of fear kept her alert. They both tossed and turned for the rest of the night with the lamp on.
The next day, they were both very fatigued from lack of sleep, but still they wished to spend their last day getting in as much fun as possible. They left at noon heading back to town in search of entertainment. As the day wore on, so did their tolerance for each other. They eventually found themselves in an argument over who forgot to pack the car charger when she noticed her cell phone dead. He reminded her, that he had to plug the lamp up the night before and her phone did not receive a full charge. This aggravated her even more as she was embarrassed by her actions of last night.
They ended up staying out much later than they had planned as most couples do when on vacation. The twisty ride back to the cabin was a quiet, fuming one.
They stumbled into the living room of the cabin and proceeded to prepare for some much needed sleep. They avoided one another, as much as one could in the confines of a small cabin, as they readied themselves for bed.  The husband was the last to reach the covers again and snapped the light off on his way over to the comfort of dreams.
As tired as the woman was, she could not find sleep. She could hear the rhythmic breathing of her husband behind her. This told her he was sleeping deeply. The window allowed more light in tonight as the sky was clear and the moon very near full. The lunar light cast an almost bluish tinged light onto the desk. As her eyes adjusted, it seemed quite bright. Still, the light did nothing to illuminate the darkness beyond the desk into the farther reaches of the loft.
The woman found herself staring into that darkness, imaging shapes moving about. She was just about to scold herself when she heard the same strange creaking sound from night before. Holding her breath, she waited for a sign, any sign, that it was a mouse or just the cabin settling. Again, she heard the creak and this time followed by the familiar claw on wood sound. Slowly the wife turned over in bead to clutch at her husbands back. She did so as gingerly as possible for fear of waking him a second night over her silly imagination.  Also not wanting to give him further fuel for the argument they still had not concluded.
The creaking/clawing came again, but this time seemed very close as if it were standing just where the moonlight met the dark. Just out of her vision. From the corner of her eye she noticed  two red pin pricks of light again. They were close to the floor, maybe two feet from where the wooden floor started and no more than a foot from the side of the desk.
The red lights did not move, they did not blink. They just seemed to stare at her. She tried every way to rationalize what was happening. She even went so far as to shut her eyes and will it away. When she would open her eyes again, they were there, staring at her. Always staring.
A rustling thump came from the direction of the desk and she let out a soft cry. The woman could take no more. Roughly shaking her husband awake, she pleaded in a desperate voice for him to awake and  turn the light on.
The husband came awake with a half snort and was very disoriented. As he lay there gathering his wits , his wife clutching his back, he felt the weight of frustration wash over him.
"Honey, this has to stop." Exhaustion and annoyance creeping into his voice. "I have to drive for hours in the morning. You have to tame that imagination of yours!"
The woman buried her face into her husbands back. Still, she kept her eyes on the glowing dots of light.
"There is something by the desk... it's coming this way and it is looking at me!" The fear was evident in her voice as the creaking noise came again from that general direction.
The man seemed to not notice it. "This is nothing more than your mind playing tricks on you. Be reasonable!" he pleaded.
Sensing his wife trembling behind him, he rolled over to face her. As he did, he noticed the two tiny lights himself.
"Look, let's be rational here." He said gently to his wife. "What do you think that could be?"
When she did not answer, he sat up somewhat in bed to gain a better vantage point of the lights They hovered completely still by the desk.
"Think dear.... That is nothing more than our cell phones, plugged up and charging by the desk." He stroked her hand reassuringly. "You have to stop working yourself up over things like this."
He could feel her relax beside of him.
"Of course!",she thought to herself, "what else could it be!". Feeling very silly, she sat there with her husband in the dark staring at the red points of light.
Suddenly a high pitched keening sound shattered the quiet of the room! It was an almost rhythmic chirping noise that was defiantly coming from down stairs!
"What is that?" she cried out to her husband. The sound continued methodically over and over. Her husband did not answer. She could sense his body tensing up beside her.
"Honey! What is that sound?" she desperately asked again.
Her husband swallowed loudly and took a deep breath. Slowly he reached his arms around his wife and she could feel that he was trembling. He still did not answer her. It was then that a cloud passed over the moon, plunging the loft into an eerie black void.
She felt as if she might feint as the two pin pricks of light slowly rose into the air. The couple silently followed the red glowing orbs until they seemingly rested about 7 foot from the ground. Never once did the "eyes"  blink.

The almost mechanical, chirping sound continued to come from downstairs.

Horrified she pleaded "Oh honey please tell me what is that sound!".

Finally her husband broke his silence with a shaky voice.......

" That is the sound of my cell phone. I plugged them both up downstairs as soon as we got here"........

The eyes of the corpse were milky and dead as they stared up at us....but stare at us they did!

Today I am going to show you how to make some fast, cheap and multipurpose eyes. If you are like me, you have a few good Halloween props that are devoid of any kind of ocular apparatus. I personally have numerous skulls, bucky skeletons,. ground breakers, zombies, and even jack-o-lanterns that could benefit from some milky, dead eyeballs.

The cashiers at Walmart always look at me like I'm building a bomb!
You will need the following :
A box of oven bake clay (get white as it may alter the color of your eyes if you get another) Walmart 5.99
    A glue gun
Glue sticks (it takes about 3 sticks for 2 eyes)
2 round drawer knobs (can be found at Hobby Lobby or Micheal's for about 2.99)
Machine oil or Vasaline  (this is to lube the mold for smoother extraction of eyes)

You start by molding half of your clay into a rectangle that is about an inch and a half deep. Use your wooden knobs as a guide for dimensions as you will be pressing them in about and third of the way.

I always feel like... somebodies watchin me!

After you have shaped your rectangle, carefully press your wooden knobs into the clay. Be careful not to go to far or they will stick. You can shape and mold your clay around them so you have a good mold.Carefully twist the wooden knobs to remove them. Now inspect your eye molds for cracks, breaks and general smoothness. When you are satisfied, follow the instruction on the clay to bake your mold and make it hard. I had mine in about 35 minutes at 275 but size does matter so follow instructions on box!

You can use this for an abstract pig snout as well

Allow your finished mold to cool for several hours. Once it has, lubricate the sockets with machine oil or Vasaline, using your fingers to ensure even, smooth coverage.

Allow your glue gun to get hot...very hot and start to fill about 2/3 of the cavity with smooth short squeezes to ensure an even distribution. Work on one eye at a time or you will get a built up wormy look.

After a couple of hours drying time you can now extract your creation. You may have to use a small spoon to help you scoop out your prize. You can take a Xacto Knife to clip away imperfections or just leave them to look even more rotted.
If the eyes are the window to the soul...these lead to a glue factory.

Now you can add them to your favorite prop for an added shock factor. Just use more hot glue to secure them in. You can experiment with various colored glue sticks as well as putting objects into the glue (like red rubber washers to simulate an iris).

For advanced haunters, you can head over to Monsterguts and buy the 9 volt LED eye set to add to your eyes and make them glow.
Just press your hot glue gun into the backs of your finished eyes to make a hole for your LED, add LED, then glue over. I recently ordered a few so I will be sure to post pictures when I add them.

Now you are an eye making factory! You can add them to several things for a more sinister appearance such as a large rag doll, portraits, or stuffed animals. You can also easily do fingernails and even teeth molds in this fashion. Happy Haunting!
